John & Jen, with music by Andrew Lippa, lyrics by Tom Greenwald and book by Lippa and Greenwald is a two-person musical portraying the relationships between a brother and sister, and then, a mother and son. Issues such as proximity, support, the Vietnam War, the American political system, and most importantly, relationship, are explored through the eyes of Jen as we observe 30 years of life through the 2 acts. Comedy, reflection, and growth are all integral parts of the performance as the actors stand bare, employing minimal props and set throughout this winding piece.

One of the main points of conflict within the piece is the effect proximity and distance have on interpersonal relationships, making John & Jen particularly relevant in the Covid era. How can individuals receive and offer support to loved ones when they are thousands of miles away? How does one release attachment and control over another’s life without harbouring feelings of resentment and betrayal? These are all deeply relevant questions that the musical theatre art form allows us to interrogate on an emotional level that is both sophisticated and childlike at times, unpacking the psyche of family duty.
