Astor Theatre
At Perth Symphony, we love to re-work the music of the world’s most talented artists with new orchestral sounds. After the fun we had presenting you the music of George Michael with the talented WAAPA Gospel Choir earlier this year at The Astor Theatre, we thought: why stop there? After speaking with Matt Allen (founder of the WAAPA Gospel Choir) it was clear, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin were next in line to get the PSO treatment.
Stevie Wonder: singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. A child prodigy, he is unequivocally one of the most critically and commercially successful musical performers of our time, having recorded more than 30 top ten hits and having received 25 Grammy Awards. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn’t heard his name, and by extension his beautiful, from-the-heart, soulful songs.
Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul. An absolutely formidable vocalist. The first ever female performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, and rated by Rolling Stone as the number one greatest singer of all time. Epitomising soul music at its most gospel-charged, her inspiring and uplifting music has empowered generations of people.
Perth Symphony Strings, rhythm section and horns will grace The Astor Stage along with the incredible WAAPA Gospel Choir for the second time to celebrate the timeless songs of these two soul giants. Join us to experience their hits as you’ve never heard them before, performed by some of WA’s most remarkable young musicians.
Great timing too, as Aretha prepares to get back into the studio and record what she says will be her last album, with good friend Stevie Wonder.
“Later this year, the legendary soul singer will return to the studio to make a new record. She described the album as “kind of multi-(directional).” “We’re not pigeonholed to any one thing,” she added. She recruited her old pal Stevie Wonder to help with her latest project. “Of course, several of the songs are going to be produced by Stevie (Wonder),” she said. “There’s only one Stevie, right?”
